HONG KONG — As the international art elite descends upon the city for the 2026 edition of Art Basel, a sprawling forest of 150,000 oversized plush blossoms is set to redefine the Central Harbourfront. Opening March 19 at AIA Vitality Park, “Flower Market” marks the highly anticipated Asian debut of Australian hyperrealist artist CJ Hendry. The four-day immersive installation, sponsored by Henderson Land, offers a whimsical, accessible counterpoint to the high-stakes trade occurring in the city’s nearby galleries, inviting the public to explore a massive greenhouse filled with soft-sculpture flora.
From Instagram to the Global Stage
CJ Hendry’s rise to prominence is a modern success story. Originally a student of graphic design in Brisbane, the 37-year-old artist pivoted to full-time drawing, gaining a massive global following via social media for her breathtaking hyperrealistic ballpoint pen works. Now based in New York, Hendry has moved beyond the page, creating large-scale “experiential retail” installations that blur the lines between fine art and public spectacle.
While some traditionalists initially questioned the “seriousness” of an artist born of the digital age, Hendry’s technical mastery is undeniable. Her drawings possess a disorienting precision that mimics photography, and she brings that same obsessive attention to detail to her three-dimensional environments. Previous projects have included a monochromatic ball pit in the Mojave Desert and a literal flower market in Brooklyn, each designed to completely suspend the viewer’s sense of reality.
A Botanical Tribute to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong pavilion features 26 unique plush flower designs housed within a transparent, luminous greenhouse designed to integrate the city’s iconic skyline and harbour. Two specific commissions anchor the exhibition:
- The Henderson Flower: Created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Henderson Land, this piece mirrors the petal-inspired geometry of The Henderson, a Zaha Hadid Architects-designed skyscraper that has become a landmark of the Central district.
- The Bauhinia: A plush rendering of Hong Kong’s official floral emblem. By recreating this civic symbol in a material associated with childhood comfort, Hendry invites visitors to reflect on local identity through a lens of soft, nostalgic optimism.
Democratizing “Art Month”
The timing of Flower Market is intentional. While Art Basel Hong Kong remains the primary engine of the Asian art market—accessible largely to collectors and professionals—Hendry’s installation is free to the public. Positioned on the democratic space of the waterfront, the project challenges the gatekeeping often associated with “Art Month.”
“This installation is a reminder that the most durable cultural statements are often the ones that don’t require a press credential to experience,” the artist’s team noted regarding the project’s public-facing philosophy.
Visitor Logistics and Experience
The installation is more than a visual display; it is a tactile experience. Every visitor who registers in advance will walk away with a complimentary plush flower, a signature Hendry gesture that turns the audience into participants and collectors.
- Dates: March 19–22, 2026
- Location: AIA Vitality Park, Central Harbourfront
- Admission: Free with mandatory advance online registration.
- Keepsakes: One free plush flower per registered visitor; additional flowers available for HK$38.
As Hong Kong continues to evolve as a global creative hub, Flower Market stands as a testament to the city’s enduring cultural ambition. By blending corporate patronage with high-concept public art, Hendry ensures that while the billion-dollar deals happen inside the convention centres, the beauty of the season remains available to everyone on the shore.
